ReSoMal Oral Rehydration Salt

ReSoMal: rehydrating severely malnourished people

Resomal Oral Rehydration Salt

A commonly medical complication of severe malnutrition is dehydration. As long as they are not in shock, dehydrated severely malnourished patients require an oral rehydration treatment using a specially formulated rehydration salt called ReSoMal.

ReSoMal is an oral rehydration salt (ORS) adapted to the needs of the severely malnourished patients.

It contains less sodium and more potassium than standards rehydration salts. It has to be administered under medical surveillance and should never be distributed to families.

Compact or Life manufactures ReSoMal in accordance with the 1999 WHO recommendations published in “Management of severe malnutrition: a manual for physicians and other senior health workers”.

Compact for Life ReSoMal is available in:

  • sachet of 84,2g (recommended dose for rehydration of a child of 10kg)
  • sachet of 420g

How to use ReSoMal

Dissolve one sachet of ReSoMal-84.2g rehydration salt  in 2 litres of clean drinking water to obtain the concentration of nutrients and minerals indicated on the data sheet.

The ReSoMal solution must only be given orally in small sips or by NG tube. Never administrate the ReSoMal solution by IV infusion.
For further information, see ”Management of severe malnutrition”, WHO 1999.

Logistical qualities of ReSoMal

Packing

ReSoMal-84.2g is packed in strong 3-layer aluminum laminated sachets.130 sachets are packed in a strong export carton, each 10.946 kg net, 11.5kg gross, volume: 0.0272 CBM. 54 cartons are packed on a one-way Euro-pallet and shrink wrapped.

Shelf life

The shelf life is minimum 3 years from date of production if kept below 25oC. At a storage temperature of 25-35oC the shelf life will be reduced to 2 years and at a storage temperature of 35-40oC  to 1 year. At this temperature a slight coloring and caramel smell will develop. Storage at 50oC will drastically reduce the shelf life of ReSoMal.

The shelf life of ReSoMal is limited by the development of off-tastes and a positive taste evaluation at the normal dilution is a guarantee for the security of the product.

No microbiological hazards will develop in ReSoMal as long as the sachets are not opened. The low water activity in ReSoMal prevents the growth of any micro-organisms.
